LED screen advertising in Malaysia
Almost every billboard worth buying in Malaysia is now an LED screen. That changes what you are actually buying — and most of the confusion about price comes from not understanding the loop.
You are buying a slot, not a billboard
This is the part that catches most first-time buyers. A static billboard is yours alone for the month. An LED screen runs a loop — a repeating sequence shared between several advertisers — and you buy a slot inside it.
A common structure is ten slots of fifteen seconds, giving a loop of two and a half minutes. Your advert plays once per loop, so roughly twenty-four times an hour, for as long as the screen operates each day. Loop length and slot count vary between operators, and they matter enormously: the same "one slot" on a screen running a two-minute loop is worth considerably more than on one running five minutes.
Always ask for slot length, loop length and the number of advertisers in the loop. Without those three numbers, a quoted price tells you almost nothing.
Where LED screens sit
- Highway gantries — overhead structures spanning the carriageway, facing traffic head-on. The largest audiences, and the shortest attention windows. See our guide to highway gantry advertising.
- City roadside and building-mounted screens — slower-moving traffic, pedestrians, and repeat exposure from people who pass daily. Strong in the Kuala Lumpur Golden Triangle and dense commercial districts.
- Indoor and lift screens — small screens, stationary viewers, real dwell time. A different attention product entirely; see lift screen advertising.
Advin does not own screens. We work through selected media-owner and operator partners across Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley, Penang and Johor, which means the shortlist you get is built around your brief rather than around inventory that needs filling. Current availability and rates are confirmed with the relevant partner before any proposal is issued.
What LED changes about how you buy
- Short flights are possible. Because nothing is physically pasted up, day and week buys are routine. Static sites generally are not.
- Creative can change mid-campaign. Swapping artwork is a file upload, not a reprint — useful for launches, countdowns and multi-message campaigns.
- Dayparting is available on many sites. Concentrating your slots into peak hours can be better value than spreading them thinly across the day.
- Proof of play exists. You can get evidence the advert ran. What that evidence looks like varies by site, so agree the format before you book, not after.
Artwork, in practice
Every screen has its own resolution and aspect ratio, and they are rarely standard. A file built for one site will usually need rebuilding for another. Expect to supply artwork per placement, and expect a deadline — operator and authority approval both take time, and that lead time is the single most common cause of a late launch.
For roadside and highway screens, design for a glance: very few words, one idea, high contrast, brand visible immediately. Detail, URLs and small type are wasted at speed.
What to check before you commit
- Slot length, loop length, and how many advertisers share the loop.
- Daily operating hours — a screen that runs eighteen hours is not the same buy as one that runs twelve.
- Whether the audience figure quoted is traffic past the site or people who can actually see the screen.
- Artwork specification and the approval deadline.
- What happens if the screen goes dark: make-good policy, and who confirms it.
What it all adds up to in money is covered in what billboard advertising costs in Malaysia.
What is LED screen advertising?
Advertising played on a large digital display rather than printed and pasted onto a static board. The screen runs a repeating loop shared between several advertisers, and you buy a slot within that loop. Because the content is digital, short flights, mid-campaign creative changes and dayparting all become possible.
How long is an advert on an LED screen?
A common structure is a fifteen-second slot within a loop of around two and a half minutes shared by ten advertisers, which plays your advert roughly twenty-four times an hour. Loop length and advertiser count vary by operator, so confirm both before comparing prices between sites.
Is an LED screen better than a static billboard?
For most campaigns, yes, because of flexibility: short bookings, changeable creative and dayparting. The trade-off is that you share the site with other advertisers instead of holding it exclusively, so a screen with a long loop and many advertisers can be worse value than it first appears.
Can I book an LED screen for one day?
On many sites, yes. Day and week bookings are routine on digital inventory and are commonly used for launches, events and short promotional bursts. Availability at short notice depends on the site and the time of year.
What artwork do I need for an LED screen in Malaysia?
Artwork is built per screen, to that screen's exact resolution and aspect ratio, and submitted ahead of a deadline set by the operator. Approval by the operator and the relevant authority both take time, so confirm the specification and the deadline before you plan your creative schedule.
