What makes advertising in Malaysia different

Four things routinely surprise brands and agencies buying Malaysian out-of-home for the first time. None are difficult; all are easier to plan for than to discover late.

  1. Content is approved separately from the site. The media owner holds the display licence for the structure, but your creative is approved by the relevant local authority — and, for indoor screens, by building management. Regulated categories take longer. This window belongs in your timeline from the start.
  2. Artwork is prepared per screen, not per campaign. Every screen has its own pixel resolution and aspect ratio. There is no single master file that runs everywhere.
  3. Rate cards move. Published rates and the actual rate for your dates are often different numbers, and they change by quarter and by site. Availability and price are worth confirming per brief rather than planning from a PDF.
  4. Three markets, three audiences. Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor behave differently — Johor in particular carries a large cross-border Singapore audience that runs on a weekly rather than daily cycle.

What Advin handles for an overseas client

  • Availability and pricing — confirmed with the relevant media owner for your exact dates before a proposal is issued.
  • Specification sheets — resolution, aspect ratio, file format, slot and loop length, operating hours and artwork deadline, per placement.
  • Content approval — artwork submitted through the media owner to the relevant local authority, with the approval window built into the schedule.
  • Booking and scheduling — confirmed in writing, coordinated across multiple owners where a plan spans several sites.
  • Proof of play — go-live confirmation and evidence at the level each site supports. On-site photography and video can be arranged where the evidence itself matters; request it at booking.
  • One point of contact — in your working hours, in English or Chinese.

Coverage

Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley, Penang, and Johor including Johor Bahru — highway digital gantries, city LED billboards, street-level digital panels, and indoor and lift screens. Advin does not own screens; it plans and books through selected media-owner and operator partners, so the shortlist is built around your brief rather than around inventory that needs filling.

Questions

Booking Malaysia from overseas.

Can we book advertising in Malaysia from overseas?

Yes. Most of our international work is booked entirely remotely. You do not need a Malaysian entity, a local office or a representative in the country. We handle availability, the booking with the media owner, artwork specification, local authority content approval and proof of play, and report back to you.

Do you quote in USD or Malaysian Ringgit?

Either. Media in Malaysia is contracted in Ringgit, and we can quote and invoice international clients in USD or MYR. Tell us which you want when you send the brief and the proposal comes back in it.

Can we run a one-day or one-week campaign?

Yes. Some Kuala Lumpur screens support single-day bookings and weekly flights are routine — common for launches, event tie-ins, brand moments and fan-support campaigns. Many owners prefer monthly commitments, so short bookings are worth asking about specifically.

Who handles approvals for a foreign brand?

The media owner holds the display licence for the structure. Your content is approved separately by the relevant local authority, and by building management for indoor screens. We submit artwork through the owner and build the approval window into the schedule. Regulated categories take longer.

Do you work execution-only for agencies?

Yes, routinely. Global and regional agencies use us as the Malaysian execution partner while keeping the client relationship and the wider plan. We supply availability, specification sheets, booking coordination and proof of play for the Malaysian line.

What proof do we get that the campaign ran?

Go-live confirmation, and proof of play at the level the site supports. Where the evidence itself matters — brand moments, fan-support placements — on-site photography and video of the advertisement playing can be arranged. Request it at booking so it can be scheduled.

What time zone and languages do you work in?

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Time (UTC+8) — the same working day as Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taipei and Perth, overlapping mornings with Europe and evenings with the US West Coast. English, Chinese and Malay.
