Buyer's guide
What billboard advertising costs in Malaysia
Rates run from a few thousand ringgit a month to six figures, and the gap is not arbitrary. Here is what actually moves the number — and why a published rate card would mislead you.
Why there is no price list on this page
Two honest reasons. First, Advin does not own screens — we book through selected media-owner and operator partners, and their rates move with demand, season and what is currently unsold. A number published today would be wrong within weeks. Second, list rates and the rates that get transacted are routinely different, and quoting you the list rate would not be doing you a favour.
So we confirm the current rate with the relevant partner for your exact dates, and quote that. What follows is what determines where in the range you land.
The eight things that move the price
- Audience volume. The primary driver. A gantry on a major commuter corridor costs a multiple of a suburban roadside site, because a multiple of the people see it.
- Location prestige. Two sites with similar traffic can price very differently if one sits in a landmark district. You are partly paying for the address.
- Format and size. Large-format highway screens sit at the top. City panels sit in the middle. Indoor and lift networks are usually the most affordable entry point.
- Share of the loop. On digital sites you buy a slot in a shared loop. One slot in a ten-advertiser loop is a very different product from one in a six-advertiser loop — and this is where apparently similar quotes diverge most.
- Duration. Monthly rates carry the best value per day. Weekly costs more per day; single days cost the most per day, but let you buy a launch or an event without committing a month.
- Timing. Festive and major retail periods are the tightest and dearest. Quiet months are negotiable, sometimes substantially.
- Lead time. Booking early gets you the site you want at a better rate. Booking late gets you what is left — occasionally cheap, more often not what you wanted.
- How much is unsold. The single biggest unspoken factor. An operator holding empty slots close to a start date is in a different negotiating position from one that is nearly full. This is why asking on the day matters more than any rate card.
What the rate does not cover
Budget for these separately, or you will be surprised:
- Creative production. Artwork built to each screen's exact resolution and aspect ratio. One design rarely serves several sites.
- Authority and licensing fees where these are charged separately rather than included in the rate. Confirm which applies to each site in writing.
- Changes mid-flight. Swapping creative is cheap on digital and expensive on static, but it is rarely free.
- Agency or planning fees, if you are buying through a third party — ask whether the quoted rate is gross or net.
Getting a quote you can actually rely on
Four things produce an accurate quote quickly: market, dates, audience and budget range. The budget range is not a negotiating trick — it determines whether the sensible answer is one flagship gantry or twelve indoor screens, and without it you get a shortlist built on guesswork.
Two more things help: your creative status, because approval lead time is real, and your client category, because some categories carry additional approval requirements.
Where to spend a small budget
If the budget will not stretch to a flagship site, do not buy a weak month on a great screen. A short, concentrated flight on a well-matched site beats a thin presence on a famous one. Indoor and lift screen networks are usually the most efficient starting point, and a well-chosen building list can out-perform a larger roadside screen pointed at the wrong audience.
For how the formats differ, see LED screen advertising and highway gantry advertising.
How much does billboard advertising cost in Malaysia?
Rates range from a few thousand ringgit a month for indoor and smaller sites to six figures a month for flagship highway and landmark city screens. Where a specific site sits in that range depends mainly on audience volume, format and size, share of the loop on digital sites, and how much of the inventory is currently unsold.
Why do billboard companies not publish their rates?
Because transacted rates move with demand, season and current occupancy, and published list rates are frequently not what is actually charged. A rate confirmed with the site owner for your specific dates is the only figure worth planning against.
Is it cheaper to book a billboard for a month than a week?
Per day, yes. Monthly bookings carry the best value per day, weekly costs more per day, and single days cost the most per day. Short bookings are still worth it when the campaign is tied to a launch, an event or a promotional window that does not need a full month.
What is not included in a billboard advertising rate?
Typically creative production, which must be built to each screen's exact specification, and any authority or licensing fees charged separately rather than bundled into the rate. Mid-campaign creative changes and any agency or planning fee may also sit outside the quoted rate, so confirm whether a quote is gross or net.
What is the cheapest way to start with outdoor advertising in Malaysia?
Indoor and lift screen networks usually offer the lowest entry cost, and a well-matched building list can outperform a larger roadside screen aimed at the wrong audience. A short concentrated flight on a suitable site is generally a better use of a small budget than a thin presence on a famous one.
What information do you need to quote me?
Market, dates, audience and budget range. Creative status and client category help as well, because both affect approval lead time. With those, current options can be confirmed with the relevant media owner and quoted against your actual dates.
